If you’ve been a user of Mikogo’s screen sharing software for a while now, you’ve no doubt discovered several benefits for companies that save you time and money. In general when people think about screen sharing software and its benefits, they note how it allows users to share information on their computers with other users of the software. This benefits companies most, because a lot of work needs to be shared within a company, and of course time and money should always be saved in the workplace where possible. But what about some other users of screen sharing, such as private individuals and students?

Screen sharing benefiting companies

In a nutshell, screen sharing software enables companies to conduct business meetings virtually from multiple different locations, whether it be in the same city, state or even country. This means that a company with offices in New York and California can both be viewing the same presentation made by the same person without having to fly the presenter from one location to another. This saves the company time and money and allows the presenter to only make the presentation once instead of multiple times. The Mikogo software also offers the option of recording the screen sharing, which allows employees who missed the meeting to view it at a later date or time instead of needing somebody to take notes, which may be incomplete or hard to understand – as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and what better way to explain something than show it to them visually.

Benefiting college students

Many college students are required to participate in group presentations. In these presentations, one person normally creates the presentation slides, but all members of the group are required to present. For this reason, this software can be used to share the presentation slides between members of the team and have everybody in the team viewing the same slides while discussing the presentation. Furthermore, when college students are assigned to a project in a group, screen sharing enables the group members to meet online and work remotely on their project and presentation files together in real-time.

Benefiting individuals

For many people, sending documents over email is too much of a hassle. The question “What if they don’t have the correct software to open this?” is the most common issue. Or on the other hand, “how much do I need to write in the email to explain this document to them so they can find the right information straight away?” Screen sharing software allows the user to show the document to others without worrying about formatting issues or any other issues that may come up.

If you have other experiences of screen sharing software for web presentations, please share them with us by leaving a comment below.

With Earth Day 2009 in full swing, people and organizations are promoting a healthier planet via thousands of environmentally-friendly activities, one of which can include the use of screen sharing technology. By reducing travel time and face-to-face meetings, screen sharing is an example of Green IT that allows people to organize meetings over the Web, and hence significantly reduce CO2 gas emissions.

Reductions in CO2 gas emissions can quickly and easily be reached via screen sharing meetings: Consider a team of five who meet monthly and each make a return trip of 200km, on average, on each occasion in order to attend the meetings. After a year this one group could produce up to 1.56 tonnes of CO2 gas emissions due to the travel involved.

Now just think about how many people are traveling every single day for meetings that could be achieved via easy to use screen sharing software. That’s a lot of CO2!

While Earth Day 2009 is officially today, 22nd April, there are events taking place for days to come. Consequently, we are encouraging businesses, Earth Day supporters, or anyone who has to participate in a meeting this week, to stay in the office or at home and use screen sharing to meet online. Keep your cars in the garages and use the Internet to reduce CO2 gas emissions.

To get involved on Earth Day, drop by the “<del datetime="2011-02-10T15:16:45+00:00">Green Screen Sharing</del>” Event page on the Earth Day Event Registry. Feel free to show your support here for Green Screen Sharing or check out other events taking place around the world that are promoting environmental issues and awareness.

You can also download the Green Screen Sharing Flyer for more info.

Today’s press release can be found here: Green Screen Sharing Supporting Earth Day

Since the launch of Mikogo, we have offered our screen sharing app free of charge. There are no limitations and no hidden catches. And no, you’re not dreaming.
While this is a really great offer and a great tool, we have received many questions regarding our business plan and how it is possible for us to provide Mikogo for free. We’ve all heard the expression, “There is no such thing as a free lunch”, so it’s understandable that some people are a little surprised that they can use Mikogo without reaching for their wallet/purse or without being scammed in some horrible way.

So how is Mikogo possible?
Mikogo is provided by BeamYourScreen the renowned provider of Web collaboration solutions. BeamYourScreen’s product range includes software solutions for online meetings, Web presentations, and remote support. The customers of BeamYourScreen include small, medium and large global corporations, such as Toshiba, Yamaha and Roche. Currently there are over 1400 customers worldwide benefiting from the BeamYourScreen technology.
However we received numerous requests for BeamYourScreen to provide a cheap/free screen sharing tool for private users who just wanted to host the occasional simple screen sharing meeting. For example some people just wanted something that they could use quickly to assist friends or family with computer issues via remote control. Others wanted an easy-to-use tool for online presentations and meetings.

With this in mind, the idea of Mikogo was created – a fun, easy-to-use and free tool for everyone to enjoy. Within Mikogo you’ll find all the important features of Web collaboration, such as screen sharing, switch presenter, remote control, and file transfer. However we keep Mikogo simple and easy to use for everyone, and consequently it is primarily targeted for use by private users and small businesses. On the other hand, customers using our fee-based BeamYourScreen products, who need greater Web collaboration capabilities, benefit from a wider range of features and high quality live customer support.

So why do we do it?
We hope that by providing Mikogo we will receive a lot of feedback on our tool and its capabilities, and that we can take this user experience and apply it to the BeamYourScreen tools to provide even greater service for our customers. Furthermore, small businesses using Mikogo may find that in the near future they require greater features and services, and therefore make the decision to upgrade to BeamYourScreen.

We don’t ask for much in return. A little feedback here and there via the blog and forum, but that’s about it. Other than that, it’s pretty close to a free lunch.

There are now over 45,000 Mikogo users who are enjoying our tool. If you wish to leave a comment about how you find our free service, please feel free to do so.

Cheers,
Andrew
