Remote tech support is a way for a technician to diagnose a problem, experiment with possible steps to solve the problem, and verify an implemented solution – all this via the Internet. The technician remains at his workstation. The malfunctioning computer stays where it is, too. Desktop sharing software feeds rapid-fire screenshots of the problem computer’s screen to the remote support trouble-shooter. It also captures their keystrokes and mouse clicks, sending them through the Internet to the distant machine.

Remote Tech Support Saving You Time and Costs

As you can imagine, this cuts the amount of time needed to solve a computer problem down tremendously. This can in turn reduce the cost of support. The whole process flows more smoothly using remote tech support compared to a remote support tech assistant giving computer repair instructions over the phone and blindly trying to infer what is happening on the problem machine based on descriptions from a possibly non-technical computer user.

Remote tech support can result in benefits of scale as well. Each independent solution of a problem is facilitated by giving the remote support technician more direct access to and feedback from the problem machine. The more an individual employee and computer user is assisted via remote tech support, the greater are the resulting benefits and profits for the company especially those with several hundred employees.

Almost all computer problems can be resolved and many other tasks can be completed using remote tech support. Virus removal, scanning for spyware, installation of drivers, installation of new business software and software upgrades are commonly handled remotely. Even processes which require a reboot are not a problem, as the remote technician can connect again as soon as the computer has resumed running. Failing hardware must be repaired in person, although diagnosis can sometimes be done remotely. Of course, Internet or network connection problems would prevent a remote support tech from connecting to the problem machine at all. Any such situation would need to first be resolved.

The most essential component of an efficient and effective company is knowing when to utilize group collaboration. No single person can know everything, and having additional voices added to a discussion can provide insights and comments that accelerate your business processes. Brainstorming alone or planning individual activities certainly have their place in a productive workflow, but the quality of the end product or service is vitally dependent upon the quality of the teamwork that brought those isolated components together.

Virtually anyone can benefit from a few high quality collaboration practices. Whether your team is a sounding board for marketing material, an engineering group comparing the benefits of different product designs, a collection of artists sharing techniques and visions, or a programming team debating the merits of different problem solving methods – any of those scenarios needs to have comprehensive documentation, clear channels of communication, and an accessible forum to share ideas.

Modern software tools like web conferencing or wikis are different forms of collaboration that are suited to different needs. Wikis are ideal for programmers who need to modify documentation constantly, pass notes between themselves and large groups, and maintain long-term archives of the many stages of revision their work undergoes. A web conference provides a comprehensive multimedia event that enables remote participation from team members anywhere in the world.

Group collaboration may be as simple as bringing everyone into a room with a whiteboard, or as complex as sharing code notes on a wiki during a simultaneous webcast from partners on three continents with automated digital backup and archive indexing. Your needs are specific to your business and your process, so be creative and explore your options and test out the methods with the highest return are for your group. New collaboration methods are coming out constantly, meaning your options expand continually.

Feel free to leave a comment below and share your latest experiences of group collaboration.

We’re currently in the middle of a new Mikogo version (watch out! – It’s got some great new features ) and we’re interested in hearing ideas and suggestions from the experienced Mikogo Community on what we could do to facilitate sharing session information. As you know, we currently have the Mikogo Scheduler which allows you to send email invitations with the required information to your participants. But if you could, would you improve this? Or would you use a completely new and different method?

Take a moment to think about the times when you’re organizing a session and need to communicate the session ID and details to the participants – basically you can boil it down to two situations:

Spontaneous Ad-Hoc Session – you’re just about to start an ad-hoc web conference and need participants to join in the next 5 min.

Scheduled Future Session – you’ve planned ahead and saved the session ID along with selecting the date and time.

Either way, you need to communicate the session information to your participants in a way that is easy and practical for both parties. And during these times when you’re about to organize a session, especially an ad-hoc session, perhaps you had also thought of new ways to invite participants.

How do you do it? How would you improve it? Did you ever find yourself in a situation where you thought, “Oh, this would be so much easier if Mikogo could…….!

Well, it’s that missing ….. at the end of the last sentence that we would really like to hear about from everyone.

Feel free to share your ideas in the comments below. Doesn’t matter how crazy or out-there the ideas might be – we want to hear them!

Thanks a lot

When people hear about desktop sharing, they directly associate it with business meetings, technical remote support or web conferencing. In fact, desktop sharing software can also be used as a way to share nice moments in your life, outside of the workplace. I personally enjoy the chance to travel a bit in my holidays, and have consequently seized the opportunity to use Mikogo’s desktop sharing to allow me to share the joy of my journeys through sharing my screen with friends back home, live over the web.

Screen Sharing: Business or Backpacker software?

As I mentioned, I enjoy the opportunity to travel in my holidays. When I visit a new place, I like to take a picture of the beautiful sites, and I also write daily about my travel journeys.

From my holidays abroad, I have come across an issue that can be solved by screen sharing. I believe that many people have similar experiences: when they return home, friends are always excited to know how the holidays were, what you saw and therefore ask you to quickly upload the photos online. They love to know about your experiences. But in general it can take a lot of time to organize pictures and upload them to the Internet. And after uploading the photos, you have to add some notes along with the photos, so those viewing the photos can try to understand where the photo was taken. Bottom line – it can be a long process.

Now, with desktop sharing software, I can share my computer screen in real-time over the web with up to 10 friends or family. This allows me to show all my photos as well as any upcoming travel plans while talking to them about it and explaining where I’ve been or where I’ll go. I can save the time in uploading the pictures to websites and have fun with the picture sharing while talking online. So far I’ve been finding it a lot more interesting and quick to share my holiday snaps and experiences via desktop sharing.

Mikogo desktop sharing example:

Try it out for yourself next time you want to share your holiday photos with distant friends or family. You could even do this when you’re still abroad as a great way to keep everyone back home up to date on what you’ve been up to. Desktop sharing can indeed be an interesting tool for a backpacker – Mikogo: the new traveler’s tool!

If you have sat in a sales meeting trying to close a deal – forgetting the number of setup meetings – it’s likely that a question or requirement came up during the meeting that required some form of sales support. In all likelihood, a specialist or technician was needed to be called in during the meeting and answer questions, and if the right skill set wasn’t available for the meeting it was postponed and the possibility of losing the deal increased.

Sales support options exist to assist a sales team during a sales call. Typically, sales teams brought a technician to the sales call to ensure questions could be addressed with the client in the room. So having the right sales support team resulted in a higher number of sales getting closed.

However, the cost of bringing technicians on-site including the increased travel costs and downtime from other support opportunities all impact the bottom-line and erode profits. An evolving option to enhance sales teams is online sales support. This refers to the flexibility of screen sharing software solutions that can be accessed via the web at the client site, during the sales meeting. This means the sales team is never without their remote help desk sales technicians, who can quickly attend the meeting over the Web, even while still located back at the company office.

Sales support is also available through SaaS (Software-as-a-Service), which allows a company to subscribe for a license and avoid the need to fully implement the application, but access those necessary support features through a web service.

The services vary significantly among online sales support offerings. But the important criteria to consider for those interested in online sales, are ease-of-use and to ensure you are familiar with using the service prior to the sales meeting – It would be a waste of time to set up a sales call or sales meeting to only not close the deal because you have trouble reaching your sales support team when they are needed the most.

If you have any interesting experiences about using support software to close a sales deal, feel free to share in a comment below.

Today and Monday this week, we had a couple of constructive meetings with the City of Mannheim to discuss the further use of the Twitter account @Mannheim. The discussions were conducted on a basis of cooperation and with the goal of aligning the respective interests.

Both sides have come to the conclusion that an out-of-court settlement is currently favorable and a lawsuit should be avoided. This is because the difficult legal situation is interpreted differently.

Today at 4:45 PM the following amicable settlement was reached:

Mark Zondler commits to provide his name and a photo on his Twitter account and a declaration in the Twitter account Bio section that he does not represent the city. This is to prevent confusion with the City of Mannheim. Furthermore, Mark commits to not transferring the account to any third party.

Mannheim City withdraws the cease and desist order sent on January 13, 2010. Furthermore, the City of Mannheim has committed to not initiating a court proceeding against Mark Zondler within the next 12 months.

Mark Zondler can continue to use the Twitter account @Mannheim and it has been made clear and public that the Twitter account @Mannheim does not represent the city of Mannheim.

To read the official agreement between Mark Zondler and the City of Mannheim, click here.

I was amazed by your comments, tweets, and suggestions. All your comments reassured me that I reacted appropriately by making this public, as opposed to giving in and signing the letter. If I had signed that letter, I fear that it would let the larger organizations and government bodies think they can bully the little guy around.

Let this be a lesson to any city or government who thinks they can get away with sending such an offensive and naive cease and desist order to an innocent citizen.

Message for City Governments: Need a twitter account or something from a citizen? Try asking them first. You’ll be surprised how far a “please” will take you.

Message for citizens, small business owners, and Internet users: Don’t let yourself be pushed around. You have a voice, and it doesn’t matter who you are, there are always possibilities to be heard over the Web.

The city representatives now want to talk and invited me to a meeting in the city hall on Monday. A step in the right direction. I’m also willing to talk and do not want to escalate the situation by all means.

I’ll keep you in the loop.

When you first signed up for a social media account, such as Twitter or Facebook, you probably thought it would be a cool way to keep in contact with friends, classmates, colleagues, etc. But did you ever imagine that it would result in you getting sued? Neither did we, yet this is the position that the co-Founder of Mikogo now finds himself in.

How it started:
In 2007, Mark Zondler registered a Twitter account: http://twitter.com/mannheim. Mark had plans to use this account as Mikogo was launched in 2007 and our company is based in Mannheim, Germany.

Introducing the City of Mannheim, their Legal Team and their Fail

Mark has now received a letter via registered mail from the City of Mannheim, which says that he must sign the letter and give up the Twitter account, or suffer the full force of a city’s legal team as they try to drag our a**es through the courts.

Are they serious?

But how can they do this? Just because they are a city (with no doubt an expensive and deadly legal team) and we are only a small private company, does not give them the right to push their weight around like this and threaten us.

Listen up City of Mannheim – we will not go down quietly!

The Twitter Mannheim account has never been used in a negative way, nor did we ever pretend to in fact be the City of Mannheim. Mark registered the account fair and square, just as any user would have done to get their personal Twitter account. So why does the City of Mannheim think they can flex their muscles like this? In my opinion, they could use another Twitter name, such as “city_mannheim”.

What does this mean for social media and you?

There are many other Twitter users who have accounts named after famous cities. And what about everyone else on the Web who has a blog, email address, or Facebook fan page that includes a city or famous location name? There are even people in Germany with Mannheim as a surname. Can they also expect a cease and desist order?

Well, we say NO! We might be a small private entity, but we are far from trembling in our boots. Quite the opposite – instead we are calling out the City of Mannheim as they are the ones who initiated this epic FAIL and soon they will experience the true power of social media and teh interweb!

This is not just to save our own skins, because I’m sure that there are many private individuals who have found themselves in a similar situation, but perhaps did not react like we will. So for their sake and ours, this blog post is us making a stand as we feel the City of Mannheim breathing down our necks and into our wallets.

Would you let Mannheim walk all over you?

I can only assume that the good people at the City of Mannheim actually expect us to roll over and die. Well, the reality is not quite that. Instead we are putting it to the people of teh Interweb.

Are they allowed to do this? Are the Goliaths of this world allowed to rule the Internet and social media, or will the Davids out there stand up for themselves?

If you think the City of Mannheim has a point, then where does it end? How far is too far?

Also consider this: the City of Mannheim never contacted Mark directly to enquire about the Twitter account. Instead first contact was this cease and desist order threatening legal action. We are a taxpaying company of Mannheim, yet this is how they treat us. Is this how you expect to be treated as a taxpayer, and hence a city customer?

Effective communication is the key to successful business. Although face-to-face communication can appear fast and straightforward, in many cases, it is simply impossible due to distance. Thus, people travel for their business meetings. According to the statistics published by the UK Department for Transport, commuting and business trips constitute 19% of all trips made in 2008; and of all miles driven by car, almost 40% were composed of commuter and business travel. While business travel facilitates communication, it carries with it the substantial expense of both time and money.

Luckily, advances in technology have brought new possibilities. And desktop sharing software is one of these. Desktop sharing software is an application through which one can share computer screen content live over the Web with others. It might sound trivial, yet it is a powerful tool, applicable in various business occasions such as online meetings, web conferencing, web presentations, online training and remote support.

1. Online Meetings:

Desktop sharing allows for real time cross-office collaboration among many colleagues. By sharing the same screen content, such as an image, a graph, or a chart, meeting participants can see exactly what others are referring to very quickly. Session time is shortened because the desktop sharing app saves you the time that you would have spent describing what you see to meeting participants. Moreover, the “switch presenter” function of the desktop sharing tool allows an appointed participant to share his/her screen. This transforms a one-way communication into an interactive one and thus makes the meeting more productive.

2. Web Conferencing:

Desktop sharing tools are frequently used to conduct web conferences as well. The presenter can use the desktop sharing tool to send out an invitation and inform attendees of the necessary info to join the web conference. There is no need to distribute files in advance because participants can view any files shown on the presenter’s screen in real-time or ask the presenter to transfer the files via the desktop sharing application’s file transfer feature.

3. Web Presentation:

Web presentations enabled via desktop sharing are a perfect way for companies to interact with customers and clients. With desktop sharing tools, not only can salespeople demonstrate their products but they can also invite customers to experience the product, such as software programs, by handing over remote control of the computer’s mouse/keyboard.

4. Online Training:

By using desktop sharing tools in employee training, companies can save considerable money because they no longer need to set up projector equipment or pay for the travelling cost of external lecturers. Instead, a lecturer’s teaching material can easily be shared from their computer screens via a desktop sharing app for all their participants to view. Lecturers can also utilize such desktop sharing features as “participant pointer” or “whiteboard” to engage trainees and thus create an interactive learning environment.

5. Remote Support:

Some desktop sharing tools include remote keyboard/mouse control function, which is particularly popular among IT companies. Now, with just a few mouse clicks to start the desktop sharing app, support personnel can request to view a clients’ computer screen as well as control the client’s keyboard and mouse and therefore offer timely technical support. One can also record the whole technical support session for documentation and any future cases.

Understanding the advantages of desktop sharing applications is one thing; finding the most suitable one to achieve the greatest effect may be another, especially when there are several desktop sharing tools on offer and each has its own features. Here are a few things to consider:

Functions

When choosing desktop sharing tools, start from scratch and list the functions that you truly need. For example, if remote support is part of your services, then you should exclude those without remote keyboard/mouse control.

Computer Knowledge

The point of using a desktop sharing app is to facilitate communication. High level technology only works when users know how to make it work. Thus, choose a tool that is accessible and easy for users, including the average computer novice.

Security

In the business world, the confidentiality of business information is of great importance. Choose a desktop sharing tool that conveys your information in a secure way. 256-Bit AES encryption is widely recognized as a secure form of communication architecture.

Reliability

It is crucial that the desktop sharing solution is reliable. If it freezes during your session, this would disrupt the flow of communication; even worse, you would leave your customers/clients with an unprofessional impression.

Budget

A desktop sharing solution is not an exclusive privilege to big companies with huge budgets. Small businesses with small budgets can also enjoy the convenience brought forth by small business software including desktop sharing tools. Freeware is actually a good starting point as it does not incur any costs and usually includes the core functions you would need in online communication.

In a time of globalization, businesses and services take place anytime and anywhere. Desktop sharing solutions improve the efficiency and effectiveness of cross-office collaboration, online product demonstrations, employee trainings and customer services at little or no cost. With it, small businesses can save a substantial amount of time and money and achieve greater success.

Since the beginning of this winter, we’ve seen freezing temperatures everywhere across the northern hemisphere, leading Europe and the US into one of its coldest seasons ever. Despite the fact that many considered the last climate change conference in Copenhagen a failure, the signs of this effect appear to becoming clearer, and this winter is a true reflection of that. We’ve seen China covered in snow, US was hit by many snowstorms but Europe seems to be in the worst situation. Hit by snowstorms almost across the board, the cold temperatures have even resulted in the loss of lives in several countries.

Last week, the UK stole the spotlight. Britain faced chaos last week as snowstorms got worse and the whole country went under snow and ice, giving us this shocking satellite picture (above), where we see a completely frozen Britain, just like Hollywood movies about the end of the world. The chaos spread easily as roads were closed, airports and trains suspended their services and millions of people were left literally out in the cold. Sports fixtures were canceled, millions couldn’t reach their workplaces, some areas faced food shortages and salt supplies nearly ran out. UK’s The Sun says that snow could cost Britain’s economy £1Billion.

Over the Internet, millions who couldn’t get out of their homes shared the snow stories and even a website, using Twitter, was created to allow people to share how bad the snowstorm was, just by sending tweets with the hash-tag #uksnow. But Twitter also showed that many managed to easily overcome the difficulties caused by the snow, by using one simple software: Mikogo. Instead of cancelling or postponing their business meetings, they simply attended the meetings from their own homes using desktop sharing. Teams were brought together in a web conference by the power of a mouse click. And even if someone needed to access files on other computers, it was easy using remote access. And all that without any cost at all.

Mikogo has been a great resource for those willing to commit to environmental-friendly behaviors, and helps to slow down the climate change. But this time, according to some of our users, Mikogo was a true-life saver! With Mikogo you can attend your meetings online from anywhere, organize web conferences or webinars and even access others’ computers to provide remote support.

Remember, if the snow hits again, don’t worry! Stay warm and cozy inside your home and use Mikogo to reach your appointments!

Web 2.0 is rapidly changing the world wide web and consequently also business websites. Where a few years ago it was perfectly fine to have a static website with your company’s name and contact info, this is nothing to write home about anymore. Having a dynamic website that allows you to get into a true dialogue with your visitors no longer gives you an edge, it’s fast becoming standard.

Content Management Systems (CMS) help with that as they allow you to create, store and manage all your web content. From static pages – they are not completely dead, no – to blogs to video files.

Advantages of Drupal

One recent and intriguing CMS discovery is that of Drupal. What is Drupal? Well, the fact that Drupal is the White House’s number one choice, is a good place to start with that question. What sets Drupal apart from the rest is the fact that it’s perfect to create a community. Modules for blogs and forums make it very easy to engage your customers directly and thus develop brand recognition. And because Drupal is open source, the software is completely free.

But while anybody can download it, not everybody can use it in a way that makes working with it time and thus money well spent. Which is where professional Drupal firms come into play.

Let The Orchestra Team Pimp Your Drupal

When looking for some Drupal support, don’t go past The Orchestra Team, who are dedicated to bringing big enterprise level technology down to small businesses. They bring the expertise and experience in creating and adapting small business websites and serving them up on your table, leaving you free to worry about the content.

And it’s really easy to add content to your existing web presence. You don’t even need to know html, nor do you need extra software like dreamweaver. You just go to Drupal, log in and there you go. Just press “create content” and you can announce a new product, a new campaign – any new content.

Have a look at this video to see how you create a page with Drupal in a few simple steps:

Orchestra’s Drupal Small Business Edition

Orchestra took the basic Drupal Core and custom-designed a package that is really the perfect fit for small businesses. Their Drupal Small Business Edition is slim and fast, easy to use and – not to forget – easier on a small budget. It includes:

An Administration Module to manage your site

Standard business website pages (Home, About Us, etc.)

Company Blog & Social Media Page

SEO Optimization

Advanced Contact Form to convert traffic to leads

Security & Permissions

Analytics Module for traffic reporting

And if your business and/or your website is growing, the Drupal Small Business Edition can easily be adjusted by setting up additional functionalites, such as:

Web Video

Forums

Online Service Call Tracking

Online Calendar of Events

User Management (allow visitors to create users)

Get in Contact with Orchestra

So if you are on search for the perfect solution for your website, we can recommend getting in touch with the awesome team at Orchestra. You can do so via phone or via their contact form. The team will have a close look at your existing web presence and then tailor-make a proposal that allows you to see exactly what you are buying, how much it will cost, and how long it will take to have your ideal web presence build for you. For more information, check out The Orchestra Team page on their Drupal services.

With the Kyoto Protocol expiring soon in 2012, delegations from 192 countries are now gathering in Copenhagen. The aim of this summit is to create a new treaty that could more effectively curb the greenhouse gas emissions to slow down man-made climate change, which, as evidence has shown, has caused more droughts, more flooding, rising sea levels and more extreme weather incidents.

Though reducing the green house gas emissions is the key to mitigating global warming, it is by no means the only action to take to save the Earth. Many things still need to be done – for example, recycling. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the world population is expected to smash through the 9 billion barrier by 2050. Contrary to the population expansion, there are only limited amounts of natural resources. That means, if human beings do not start saving and recycling, the future generations will have less available resources to use and consequently a complete depletion of resources could become a reality.

As citizens of planet Earth, environmental awareness is our responsibility and our common objective for the future.

What has your company done to go green? You can either speak for your own businesses or for the companies you work at. Cast your vote and spread the environmental-friendly seed!

MagnaCAD Design Inc., a leading provider of CAD, CAE and PLM solutions, recently announced the launch of JRIV, its new encompassed design engineering solution bundle. JRIV integrates with IronCAD 3D solutions to provide IronCAD users fast and intuitive access to a range of powerful applications that will reduce time and overhead for manufacturing companies. But where does Mikogo fit into this picture?

President of MDI, Tom Lehnhaeuser, was impressed by Mikogo’s capabilities and has integrated the desktop sharing tool in the JRIV software bundle. This means that customers of JRIV and IronCAD will be able to access Mikogo and start sessions from the JRIV toolbar. In fact the inclusion of Mikogo received a special mention in the official MagnaCAD press release last week. Here is a snippet of the press release:

“The most notable of these ancillary applications is a robust web conferencing and screen sharing application powered by Mikogo (BeamYourScreen GmBH) that can be initiated directly from IronCAD. This is an ideal solution for IronCAD users that need to collaborate with a global design team or just confer with their vendor supply chain using IronCAD in real-time to demonstrate visually any potential issues with a project. Simply click a button from IronCAD and you start a collaborative web-session.”

The full press release can be found on the MagnaCAD homepage. For further information about the JRIV software bundle, visit www.magnacad.com/JRIV.html

Traffic coming directly from search engines has moved into the double-digits in the last year. This in itself is reason enough, we believe, to closely follow recent developments on the search engine front, where ‘Goliath’ Google is challenged by the as-of-yet ‘David’ Bing.

The October rankings figures for search engines show Google still firmly on top of the game at 70.60%. But compared to September this means a 1% drop and the same goes for Yahoo, who has slid from 16.38% to 16.14%. In contrast Ask.com and Bing have increased their share with 2.62% (+2%) and 9.57% (+7%) respectively.

Clearly, you can’t exactly call this development a “landslide”, but does it still indicate a trend? Especially regarding the impressive growth of Bing which was only launched in June 2009. Comparing it to its competitors, could it be the fun factor of the background image combined with a more stylish and very clean search interface, that sets Bing apart and explains its recent growth?

Google certainly appears to take Bing’s leap ahead very seriously indeed, or so it would seem considering Google’s announcement to re-design their search interface: To make searching more user-friendly, Google will introduce a side-bar – a feature which Bing already possesses.

So, is this the beginning of a new saga in the ’search war’? What role will the changes in the search algorithms play? e.g. Google announced that they would include a website’s speed in their algorithm. And can we expect a change in Google’s grip on their integrity of their search results? – regardless of whether this might create controversy and outrage as is happening right now concerning the image results for ‘Michelle Obama’.

What do you think?

No, we haven’t lost our command of the English language quiet yet. But we might need to adjust our understanding of communication yet again, as technology is not only changing our methods of communication – from letter to telegram to phone call to email to messaging to twittering to video calls… – but also the way we approach and utilize our communication streams.

For example, how often do you write letters these days? A letter that is not an invoice. Emails have become the new (personal) letters that allow you to put your thoughts and feeling into well formed words and phrases.

Or is an email supposed to be something quick, just to share some important data, as blogger Sharon Drew Morgen proposed. Are emails really only “one-way missives” that do not allow a true sharing of thoughts and feelings? In short – is emailing even communicating?

Is this just a symptom of our fast-moving age, where nobody has the time anymore to sit down and read a long email before composing an answer? Or is it the exact opposite? Are old understandings of communication popping up again in a new look?

Ever since the Internet came into existence along with emailing, there have been critical voices saying that all this virtual stuff cannot make up for personal meetings at all. And indeed, smileys have been introduced to virtual conversations to make up for the loss of seeing another person’s facial expressions, demeanor, or hearing their tone of voice.
Well-known (and very funny!) comedian Arj Barker highlighted this in his stand-up shows earlier this year. Although he has said this for the sake of his comedy routine, his point is interesting that communicating tone of voice via digital communication can at times be confusing. For the humorous side of new-age communication, check out his lines on this at approx. 2min 02 sec in the video below.

But Sharon Drew’s blog entry is not a swan song for virtual communication. Rather technology now makes it possible to have old-style communication via the Internet. Video calls allow you to hear and see your opponent in real time. Desktop sharing could even replace the family get-together to watch your uncle’s slideshow of the latest holiday snaps.

So, is communication coming full circle or is the Internet taking it to a completely different level?

That’s a somewhat shocking figure, isn’t it? A bit of digging on our part has unearthed a number of facts on business travel which do not look so hot. And did you know that after all those years of waiting and after spending ridiculous amounts of money on business trips, 23% of business travelers then manage to fall sleep during their meeting?

Thinking of traveling? You might want to think again after you have seen some of the figures in our brand-new video on YouTube:

Since September of this year, the Mikogo Team has grown quite a bit – not only in numbers but also in languages! You might have wondered about our incredibly diverse language skills when we suddenly began twittering in Chinese, Portuguese and German. Well, the answer to the mystery is that by now, we are being supported by three interns and a student, working part-time. We thought it might be a nice idea to introduce our new team members formally to the Mikogo community and – in the process – to give you a bit of an idea of what we’re doing here the whole day. Therefore we asked them to tell you a bit about their backgrounds and to answer a few questions.

Who are our Newbies?

Chi is Taiwanese, and studies in an MBA program in the Technology University of Wuerzburg and Schweinfurt. Chi has joined Mikogo as an intern since the beginning of October.

Hsiang-Yi comes from Taichung, Taiwan, and right now is doing her Masters in British Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Since mid September Yi is is working as an intern at Mikogo.

Thiago is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and is finishing his Master’s degree in international business administration with specialization in marketing, after studying in Spain and France. Thiago has been apart of the Mikogo Team since the beginning of September as an intern.

Jule is from Berlin, Germany, and is doing her Ph.D. in literary studies at the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg. Jule is working at Mikogo on a part-time student basis.

What are they doing at Mikogo?

Why are you interested in working for Mikogo/in online marketing?

Chi: I like working at Mikogo because Mikogo offers a good opportunity for interns to learn the processes of online marketing and execute your creative marketing ideas.

Yi: Firstly, I am in fact a fan of Mikogo. This tool is free and I find it very easy to use and feel comfortable to promote a product that I myself enjoy using. As for online marketing I think it’s the trend of the future and it is really cool to gain first hand experience in using new technology and software tools to find the right customers on the Web and communicate with them effectively through the Internet.

Thiago: Online marketing has always been one of my main interests, because I was always curious about the way the Internet has been changing our lives, and as an marketing student it became an obvious passion for me. Working for Mikogo seemed really interesting from the very beginning because it looked like a big challenge for me, and I enjoy facing challenges! The idea of taking this great application and building its roots in the Portuguese speaking market from day one got me hooked from the moment I saw the internship ad.

Jule: In the past half a year I did a traineeship in the marketing department of a publishing house, where I first came in contact with online marketing and was immediately fascinated by it. I like that you easily come into direct contact with your (potential) customers in a realm where the private and the business spheres blur.

What are your responsibilities here?

Chi: My responsibilities are mainly in the Chinese market, and include online marketing activities organization and execution, product promotion, communication with web users, press releases, case studies, etc.

Yi: I reply to relevant English and Chinese tweets, contact English bloggers, contact organizations that might be interested in Mikogo desktop sharing, and checking out new software tools or new methods of promoting Mikogo.

Thiago: I’m responsible for the marketing activities of Mikogo for the Portuguese speaking world, which includes about 250 million people in the world. These activities include working on our Portuguese website as well as the SEO tasks that are involved, social media and contact with the market.

Jule: I’m working on optimizing the search results for the German Mikogo webpage and for promoting Mikogo in the German market via social media.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

Chi: Mikogo is an international team, where you can work with people from different countries and learn how to collaborate with them. Also, it’s like a big family here and all of my colleagues are so friendly. I feel comfortable and have fun working here.

Yi: I think unlimited possibilities is the thing that fascinates me. Of course, there are some routine tasks that I have to do everyday, but I can always try out new software marketing tools and explore the ever-changing Internet world. It’s awesome. Also, the colleagues in the office are friendly and open-minded – it’s very enjoyable to work with them.

Thiago: I really like our environment here, I learn a lot everyday and it’s always a great experience coming to work. I also enjoy a lot of our social media activities – it’s fun and effective at the same time!

Jule: I really learn a lot here which is always great. The team is really nice and since it’s a very international team, it’s also a great way to polish up on my English. Plus – a job where you get paid to blog and twitter?

What do you hope to learn/accomplish by working with Mikogo in online marketing?

Chi: I would like to build up my online marketing abilities here and achieve the company’s marketing goals in the Chinese market. Besides, it’s also crucial for a business student to learn how to work within an international team.

Yi: Actually, I am considering writing my thesis on online marketing so working with Mikogo is the best way to gather first hand data. Additionally, I want to become less timid when it comes to marketing and contacting people. I also want to learn more about the differences and similarities between the west and the east. And… oh, there is simply too much to count one by one.

Thiago: Well, I want Mikogo to be the nº1 desktop sharing app in Brazil and in the world!!! As for me, I really want to understand the dynamics of running a website and making it attractive to users, as well as the pathways to marketing via the web.

Jule: I really want to get more work experience besides doing my Ph.D. And since I can definitely see myself pursuing a career in online marketing, Mikogo is perfect for me.
